Dual Language Program

Dual Language Program/Programa de Idioma Dual Español-Inglés

The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) Dual Language program is designed for families who would like their children to learn another language while receiving the same high-quality academic curriculum as students throughout the division. ACPS offers K-8 Spanish-English two-way dual language programs at:

John Adams Elementary School (K-5)
Mount Vernon Community School (K-5)
Francis C. Hammond Middle School (6-8)
George Washington Middle School (6-8)

Dual Language programs are a form of enrichment education based on over forty years of research showing the advantages of learning a second language through academic content instruction. The Spanish-English two-way immersion form of dual language is characterized as follows:

Approximately half of the students are from Spanish-speaking homes and half from homes in which English (or another language) is spoken
Instruction integrates literacy and academic content knowledge in both languages
The curriculum focuses on challenging, age-appropriate academic skills and knowledge aligned to high standards for all students.

In keeping with the vision of Alexandria City Public Schools, the Dual Language Program aims to empower all students to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world through the promotion of racial equity, multiculturalism, and multilingualism. The mission of the ACPS Dual Language Program is to provide an enriched educational experience in which all students attain high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism and biliteracy, and sociocultural competence.

Programa de Idioma Dual Español-Inglés

El programa de Dual Language (Programa de Idioma Dual Español-Inglés) en ACPS está diseñado para las familias que desean que sus hijos aprendan otro idioma a la vez que reciben el mismo plan de estudios de alta calidad que el resto de los estudiantes en la división. ACPS ofrece el programa de Dual Language español-inglés, bidireccional de idioma dual en las escuelas primarias John Adams y en Mount Vernon Community School.

Los programas de Dual Language son una forma de educación enriquecedora basada en más de cuarenta años de investigación que muestran las ventajas de aprender un segundo idioma mediante la enseñanza del contenido académico. La forma de inmersión del idioma dual de español-inglés puede caracterizarse de la siguiente forma:

Aproximadamente la mitad de los estudiantes vienen de hogares donde se habla español y la otra mitad de hogares donde se habla inglés (u otro idioma).
La enseñanza integra el conocimiento de contenidos y la lectoescritura en ambos idiomas.
El plan de estudios se enfoca en habilidades académicas y conocimiento apropiado para la edad que sean estimulantes, alineados a los altos estándares que tienen todos los estudiantes.

En concordancia con la visión de las Escuelas Públicas de la Ciudad de Alexandria, el Programa de Idioma Dual apunta a empoderar a todos los alumnos para que prosperen en un mundo diverso y en constante cambio, a través de la promoción de la equidad racial, el multiculturalismo y el multilingüismo. La misión del Programa de Idioma Dual de ACPS proveerá una experiencia educativa enriquecida en la cual todos los alumnos obtendrán altos niveles de desempeño académico, bilingüismo y alfabetismo bilingüe, y competencia sociocultural.
